Pajama Day--- dreaming about Kindness

Almost everyone in our class wore their pyjamas today as we dreamed about KINDNESS. What great school spirit!!  And our friends from Rooms 8 and 11 surprised us all by baking chocolate chip cookies yesterday to pass out to everyone... in a show of kindness!
Thank you very much to them! Everyone certainly enjoyed the treat!
These girls made a path by putting the foot prints in numerical order.
This activity involved 3 different steps.
First, each person rolled a single die and had to print the number for the corresponding number of dots. (When you can identify how many dots are on the die without actually counting every dot, we call this "subitizing". We want everyone in kindergarten to be able to subitize up to 6.)
Next, everyone found a partner and together they rolled a pair of dice. Then they added up the number of dots on both dice and printed that number.
For the third challenge, some kids put themselves into groups of 3 people. They each rolled a die, and added up the dots on all three dice, then wrote down that number!!

All the way to 100

These 3 kids were putting their number sense to the test... when they sorted all these numbers and put them in order from 1 -100 on the math "Learning Carpet". They didn't go in order, though, as they were able to notice the patterns in the numbers! (ie.  all numbers with 60 something went in the same row, or all numbers that ended with a 4 went in the same column, etc. )
They also noticed that when they lined themselves up on the floor, that they were longer than all the numbers!

We used our detective tools to help us spot the letter /Tt/ all over our classroom!  I wonder if our little detectives can find any letters or words in their environment at home?

Today we spent some time with our Buddies from Room 4.

  Sharing time..... W is for..
Our school has been talking about KINDNESS this month. Next week, there are some special activities planned. Everyone is invited to participate...  starting with Monday --- Crazy for Kindness day.  Wear crazy clothes or come to school with crazy hair... and, of course, don't forget being kind to others!!!

Winter clothes movie

What do you wear in the winter?  This is what kids from Room 7 had to say about that....

Today we read and discussed this story "Don't Laugh at Me" by Steve Seskin & Allen Shamblin. It has a very powerful lesson about being tolerant of others and treating others with respect... no matter how different they might be from you. Bullying others is not acceptable, and there is no need to laugh at others or call them names!
A very good book for families to read together and discuss.
We brainstormed what we know about Kind Kids.  We will add to it as we come up with new ideas.

What do you wear in the winter movie?

We are movie stars!  ........Yesterday we read a story about what to wear when you go outside to play, and the order of putting on our outdoor clothing. Today we made a movie about this. We used a green screen and the assistance of Mrs. Lowe to help put it all together for us. Our movie is currently in the production stage (thanks, Mrs. Lowe). Stay tuned to see our movie tomorrow!!!

Learning Carpet time.....  "What numbers are missing? What number goes where the green frog is?" .......  Those teen numbers can be tricky!

Some structures with the wooden blocks....

Today one of our classmates celebrated his 6th birthday. His mom brought in some cupcakes for him to share with the class. They were yummy!  Thank you to the birthday boy and his family for the treat!

What do you wear in the snow?

Today we read this story. We were able to spot some familiar sight words in the book.
We talked about the different kinds of clothing that we wear for recess, and how it compared to the child in the storybook. We did all agree that we need to wear clothing that will keep us WARM and DRY when we go out for recess. We also tried building sentences on the Smart Board, based on the book.

Some boys were counting the popsicle sticks that we use to keep track of how many days we have been to school. Every day we add one popsicle stick to our container. Then every time we have 10 loose popsicle sticks, we bundle them up by putting an elastic around the group of 10. It makes it much easier to count so many when we can count by tens, and then add the ones that we need. Today was day #83!
Yes, we have been in Kindergarten for 83 days of learning already!
Sharing something that starts with W.....  how about words on a keychain?

Star of the Week

Our "Star of the Week" did an excellent job explaining his "All About Me" poster. We enjoyed looking at his photos and learning a little more about him. What a star!!

There are different ways to play the Mr. Snowman game. This version had the kids throwing a pom-pom, and if it landed on the number, they were able to collect that many winter erasers for their score keeping. We will also use it for comparing numbers (more/less), and adding numbers, and sequencing of numbers.

Where's the King?

Today some of us learned a new card game... called "Beat the King". The object of this game is to put the cards in the correct suit in order from  1 (Ace) to 10 by turning over one card at a time and placing it in the correct spot of the sequence. If the Kings are revealed first, before all other cards are turned over, then the Kings win. It is a fun game!

Winter stuff

"Do you want to build a snowman?"  (Anyone who is familiar with the "Frozen" movie will understand why I always want to sing this!) This is how our "puffy" snowman turned out.
Today we played with some "pretend" snow -- otherwise known as shaving cream. (It smelled great! and also helped clean our table!) We practiced printing our name and drawing numbers/letters/words/shapes.

Some of the winter activities in our classroom today....
