Pumpkins

Practicing drawing a pumpkin... (we noticed they have lots of curved lines on them)

Oh NO!!  Mrs. Grant didn't have any orange paint for us to paint our pumpkin drawings. There is only red and yellow paint.  hmmmm .... One person suggested we just paint them red. Someone else suggested we mix the red and yellow paints.... and look what happened!!  We made ORANGE paint!   It seemed so magical, and we didn't even use any magical words!!!

Here are the skeletons that we made the other day.

Halloween party tomorrow. Students may either bring or wear their costume to school. Parents are invited to come see our costume parade at 1:15 PM in the gym tomorrow.

Star of the Week

Our "Star of the "Week" did a terrific job colouring and filling in her "All About Me" poster!  She shared her poster and photos and told us all about her stuffy puppy!  Well done!
Around the room at centre time....

She said, "Look! I made a stop sign!"  and yes, it said STOP on it!!! Another new sight word for her reading and writing vocabulary!

Star of the Week

Our "Star of the Week" did an awesome job presenting her All About Me poster, telling us about her photos, and answering questions. The class was able to take what we learned from her and write a story that was all about her!  Every Monday we will have a new Star of the Week. Your child will bring home the necessary information when it is his/her turn.

  • Our presenter was very confident and used a good speaking voice, and the rest of the class was learning to be a good/polite audience - taking turns speaking and listening.
  • We are learning how people/families are the same as well as how they are different. (Social Studies)
  • As we work on these shared writing activities throughout the year, we are learning :
    • that print goes from left to write and top to bottom
    • tracking print - see one word/say one word
    • to identify the initial sounds in some words (and more sounds over the year)
    • about building a sight word vocabulary
    • about spaces between words
    • ending the sentence with a period (like a STOP sign)
    • and more!!!

Ms. Rempel took these next couple of photos in Music Class today.

Weekend News

Every Monday in our Sharing Circle, we tell our classmates about something that we did on the weekend. Then we draw a picture and write a "story" to tell about our Weekend News! Some of the skills we are working towards as beginning writers include:  We want to draw a recognizable picture, make our picture match our words, use a variety of colours, make sure the people we draw look like people, and use some letters to tell the story. Our goals will grow and develop as the year progresses.

This is what one little student told us about today  ....  the kindergarten writing says
"I was playing at the baby shower."  Notice how some letters already match the sounds being heard.

Library..Day 3

Day 3 is Library Day. Mrs. Wood brought in something interesting from her garden for us to look at! Do you know what kind of squash it is?  Then she read us the story Sopie's Squash before we got to pick out a book to check out and take home. (Only the students who returned their library book from last week were allowed to sign out a new book.)

Mrs. Macdonell came to talk to us as part of a follow up visit (for Roots of Empathy) to when Baby Elias was here last week. She also read us a special story where we talked about emotions.

PLEASE return library books by next Day 3
