Math

Today we were working with Ms. Janz on the Learning Carpet. We were putting numbers in order. We also took turns taking a number off (while our friends closed their eyes), and putting a frog in place of the number. Then the friends had to figure out what number was missing.

Math ---- making a pattern out of the LINKS,  then using them to make a shape.

Using the links to measure the chair (with a non-standard measurement).   It was 12 links long!

Dance-athon

Today was the highly anticipated dance-athon. It was a fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Our school raised over $9000 --- WOW!!  What a great donation to Heart and Stroke.  The sponsors of this event provided a prize for the top fundraiser in the school (who raised over $800 himself) and a few random draws for anyone who had brought in donations. Everyone received a free t-shirt, compliments of the event sponsors. Thank you to everyone who brought in donations for this worthy cause.
Move it, Shake it, Groove it …. Dance 4 U

Sharing time..... S is for soccer ball

This morning we were painting with watercolours. It is the first step in one of the art projects we are doing.

At centre time today, this student starting connecting blocks together in groups of 10. Then she discovered if she had 3 groups of 10, she could easily and quickly count by tens to  know she had 30 blocks--- without counting every single block. This then led her to decide she could quickly count 100 blocks by making more groups of 10 and counting by tens.  When she had 10 groups of 10---- she knew she had 100 blocks!  WOW!

Blubber

Today we learned more about penguins. We thought some of the penguin names were kind of funny (like "Macaroni").
We have learned that blubber helps keep penguins warm in that cold water!!!  Today we did a little experiment to see -- or feel-- for ourselves!  We put both our hands into a tub of cold water, but on one hand we were wearing a "blubber glove" . (We used our imaginations, to pretend it was really blubber -- like on penguins and whales!). We discovered that the hand without blubber got cold VERY quickly, while the blubber hand stayed warm.

Our "Star of the Week" did a terrific job yesterday telling us all about herself. Thank you for sharing!
Today for sharing, we saw snacks and stickers -- for the letter /s/.  And guess what?? …  she shared her "sharing" with the rest of the class. Thank you for the delicious banana chocolate chip muffins. They were yummy!!!

Book Creator

Another cold Manitoba day!  That means indoor recess....and enjoying a good book!  We have been learning how to create our own books on the iPads on an app called "Book Creator". These 2 got a chance to make their books today. We are making shape books with sight words. The students found the shapes in the room, took the photo, typed in the text, edited the size and colour of the text, and added their name as author. They did an awesome job!!!!!

This creative mind made a vacuum cleaner out of these building materials.

Walk like a …penguin?

We have been learning about penguins this week. The other day we brainstormed what we know about penguins.
  • "Penguins can…."
  • "Penguins are…."
Today we thought we would try walking like a daddy penguin who carries the egg. We found out it wasn't as easy as it looked!  Lots of giggles during this activity!

Ask your child to sing you 'The Emperor' song.

This morning we started off the day by using our imaginations to play with "pretend snow" on the tables. It even kind of "melted away" like snow eventually does!  We drove some toy cars around in the slushy snow, too!  Best of all, it even smelled pretty good! (You can try this at home, too…. all you need is some shaving cream! :))

Mrs. Grant went to a Kindergarten teachers' meeting in the afternoon so we had a substitute teacher after lunch. We played rhyming Bingo and also practiced our dance with Mrs. Hardy. We will get to perform it at the dance-athon next Wednesday.

Yesterday baby Jacob and his parents came to visit our classroom. We thought baby Jacob looked bigger than the last time we saw him, and now he can do some new things that he couldn't do when he last visited.  Pictures to follow soon.

Emotions and Empathy

We had a "Roots of Empathy" lesson today. We talked more about emotions. We brainstormed different kinds of emotions and circumstances that might lead to these different emotions. Mrs. Macdonell talked to the students about understanding their own emotions, as well as those of other people. We can "read" peoples' body language and facial expressions to help us understand how they are feeling.
We want to learn different strategies to deal with emotions positively and what we can do to help others when they feel sad, angry/mad, or scared.  This is called "empathy".

Looking at pictures with Mrs. Macdonell and identifying the emotions on the faces in the pictures

                   Check out our snowman faces!

These girls said they "worked together" to create this structure today!
(Isn't that great to see teamwork?)

The Mitten-- Room 7 style

Over the past week, we read several different versions of the story "The Mitten". Although some of the characters and setting changed in the stories, they all followed a certain pattern. Today we re-enacted our own version of "The Mitten". We used our imaginations to ...pretend this sheet was a great big mitten... and that we were the animals crawling in!! We had lots of fun!

This picture (below) is of everyone "flying" out of the mitten!!
