Jerseys and Kodable

Today everyone in school participated in National Jersey Day. We borrowed some Stevenson Sabres Jerseys to wear for the picture. Some kids wore their own jerseys. Everyone gathered in the gym, and we stood in the shape of a jersey for the photo.

Mrs. Lowe visited our class today and introduced us to the Kodable app. Kodable is a great app available for free on iTunes. Students worked together in pairs on the iPads. They used code to instruct a cute little fuzz ball through a maze, while trying to collect as many coins as possible. Every couple minutes the partners switched to ensure everyone got a turn directing the fuzz ball through the maze. During last period, some of us showed our reading buddies how to play Kodable. One Grade 5 boy liked it so much that he said he was going to go home and download the app onto his iPad!

A new sharing schedule will be sent home on Monday. We were having printer problems at school today, so Mrs. Grant couldn't print the new schedule. If you want to start searching for next week's sharing item... we will be talking about things that start with /Dd/.... as in "December" !!!  Happy searching.

We made self-portraits today.  Maybe you will recognize us from our drawings.

This is us gluing tissue paper onto another paper to make a colourful background.

Happy Birthday!

Everybody loves a party! Today we opened up our newest dramatic play centre, called "The Birthday Party centre". We started by brainstorming things you would need for a party. We made a note about what kinds of information should be included on an invitation, and how to make a birthday card!  One other item we talked about was using our imagination! Even though it was not anyone's birthday today, or this week even, we took turns pretending that it was each other's birthday! All students rotated through 4 different activities this afternoon. Mrs. Mitchell, the Speech-Language Pathologist, made some home made play-doh. At her table, students learned to divide up the dough into enough for each student, and pretended to make cakes/cupcakes. The second activity was making birthday cards and printing words on the cards, of course. The third activity was playing in the birthday centre, and the fourth activity was icing and decorating their own real cupcake -- and then eating it!

Thanks again to Mrs. Mitchell for bringing in the play-doh! If you would like to make it to use at home, here is the recipe!  Enjoy!

Play-doh Recipe

In a bowl, mix together these 4 ingredients:
3 cups flour
1 cup salt
¼ cup oil
1 Tbsp alum (found in the spice section or at Bulk Barn)

Now add to the bowl:
3 cups boiling water
1 package Kool-aide

Mix everything together. Then knead on a floured surface. Add flour until it is not too sticky!   Now you are ready to play!
