Baby day and house groups, too

Baby Jacob was here today. He is so cute! Yesterday we thought about what Mrs. Zinn might need for baby Jacob and what she would carry in her diaper bag. Today she showed us the things that she carries in her diaper bag. We also noticed how baby Jacob arrived and the way he was dressed. His mom makes sure he is dressed warmly for this cold weather. We also noticed that he wears the same kind of things we should be wearing for cold outdoor weather.

We had house groups today. House groups are where we divide up all the classes into groups that have members from each grade. Then we meet with the teacher leader. This is what we did in our groups today.

We made a snow man and Christmas bell out of paper -- Andrea and Kyle
We played football and colour dot. --- Jayden and Ethan D.
We played lego and did lite brite.--- Brianna and Tayanna
We played with dinosaurs. ---- Angelia and Nolan
We played with the instruments in the music room. --- Nathalie
We built towers with blocks. --- Lexi, Ahmad, Mia
We built towers with the big blocks. --- Geoffrey and Grady
We played Guess My Rule. --- Alia and Ethan M.
We played a game in the hallway. ---- Lily and Elizabeth
We built towers with blocks. ---- Colin and Dredyn

For sharing time today, we saw a necklace, ninja turtle, and nickels.

Mrs. Lowe stopped by our class today to share some of her photos from when she went to Churchill last year. We really enjoyed seeing her photos and hearing the stories that she told us about her trip.

Let's Go on a Bear Hunt….

Well, you will NOT believe what happened to our class today. We had finished drawing and painting our bears from yesterday, and then when we got back from Music class, our bears had disappeared from our classroom!!  Fortunately, we  had some very observant students in our class, who had spotted one of our bears on the way back to our classroom. SO…. we decided that…. "Let's go on a bear hunt, we're going to catch a big one, it's a beautiful day…we're not scared!!"  and off we went searching around the school for our bears!

We needed to use our language skills when we spotted a bear, to help the rest of the class see where we had spotted each bear. We used the "positional" words that we know….
...on the bulletin board, under the other pictures...

…on the window of the door,,,

…in the corner on the wall…..

….on the window, beside the plant…..

…above the lockers…..

…….on the locker…..

….between the water fountains, on the wall….

….up high, hanging on the EXIT sign…..

…on the gym door…..

…above the fire extinguisher….

and a few more places around the school.

WHEW!!!! We found them all!!!  YEAH!!!

How to draw a bear

Today we learned how to draw a teddy bear. At first, many students were quite anxious and worried that they wouldn't be able to do this activity when Mrs. Grant said we were going to draw a bear!
First, we watched a short video that had step-by-step instructions on how to draw a teddy bear. We got out our clipboards and paper and followed along… step by step. We were quite impressed with our drawings when we were done!
Then we painted our bears using watercolour paints. We had to be careful to hold the paintbrush carefully - and not push really hard on it!

Not everyone had time to paint their bear today, but this was one of the finished teddy bear drawings!
Our "Star of the Week". We really enjoyed his photos and stories about his photos. We especially liked his photo from when he lived in the Phillipines, and he was holding a snake! And he said he wasn't even scared!

T.W.A.S.

At the end of every week, we talk about some of the hi-lites of our week at school. Then every student draws a picture and writes a "story" to take home and share with his/her family. Students are encouraged to make the pictures match the story, write down the sounds they hear in words and/or the words they may know, add details to the picture, and make their pictures colourful. (This student ran out of time and didn't get a chance to finish colouring her picture.) This week everyone talked about the birthday party centre.
We call this activity "This Week At School" or T.W.A.S.

Another activity we did today involved rolling a die, trying to quickly identify the number of dots-without having to actually count the dots, then stamping the corresponding number on a bear paper.  (This skill of quickly identifying the number of objects in groups- such as for dots on dice - also used on dominoes and cards- is called "subitizing".)

We also had to fill in the missing letters on the bears.
