The Beaver and Wisdom

Centre time....
Shamrock Chase math game...

These boys starting writing numbers on a big piece of paper!  They have lots of numbers that they want to write!

Richelle Scott stopped in to talk to us about the beaver and wisdom, as part of The Seven Teachings.

\

As part of the discussion, Richelle asked the kids to think about a talent they each have, or something they are good at. Some of the answers included..... "I'm good at..... dancing/singing/helping mom make lunch/helping Papa and Nana get out of the chair/ gymnastics, etc. And one answer was "I'm good at explaining things, and I'm good at peace and quiet, too!"

Lego Leprechaun & Gold

A couple of the boys are thinking about St. Patrick's day, and were busy building with lego today. Chase built the leprechaun, and drew a rainbow, and wrote a note. Then, Xander built a pot of gold out of lego, and wanted Chase to add the new addition to his note!

This is how the note looked at first. It says...("Chase's leprechaun.") (I forgot to cover up the "end" before I took the photo)

Then Chase made the addition to the note - and fit the words where he could fit them - to say.....
Xander
Chase's and
of gold
Leprechaun and pot
And this is what it says if you read the words in the order they are meant to be read....(Chase's and Xander's leprechaun and pot of gold). What a fantastic job they did with the lego and the note!

We started making a rainbow out of lego!!

Secondary colours!

We read this book today. We noticed the 3 primary colours on the front. We also learned that when you mix 2 primary colours together, you get a new colour, and these new colours are called "secondary colours"

We finished the white spaces on our colour wheel, by finding the secondary colours in magazines and catalogues, and cutting and gluing them onto the colour wheel.

We worked together to paint 6 papers... 3 with the primary colours, and then we mixed the primary colours to paint the other 3 papers with secondary colours!  We are going to use these papers for an activity tomorrow .

Steve Locke, the visiting artist, had us come up with some rhyming words, and we wrote a short poem about school, using those rhyming words!

Birthday cupcakes

Today was Mrs. Johannson's birthday. She is one of the EA's (Educational Assistants) who work in our classroom. Some kids helped to make cupcakes to celebrate her birthday. But first, ..we had a conversation about how we should do it. This is what some of the conversation sounded like, with input from several kids. Some said they didn't know, and declined to add to the conversation.
Some Room 7 kids said....

  • " Put the cupcake mixer in the cup bags." (translation=put the cake mix in the cupcake liners)
  • "Add water to the cupcake mix."
  • "But first put in butter."
  • "Then put in 3 eggs into the butter."
  • "Mix the eggs and the butter."
  • Then someone said, "Put the cupcake mix and the eggs and the water in the bowl and then mix them in the bowl. Then put it in the cupcake liners. I know they are called cupcake liners because my grandma told me."

So after all these ideas, we checked the back of the box to see what ingredients we needed, then we got busy, and mixed all the ingredients together. Everyone who wanted a turn, had a turn using the mixer. We were amazed the batter turned a pink colour once we started mixing it. Then after Mrs. Grant put the cake mix into the cupcake pans, we went to the Life Skills room to bake them. We didn't want to leave the oven unattended, so we stayed in the room, enjoyed the nice comfy couches, and listened to a couple stories, as we enjoyed smelling our cupcakes baking in the oven!!

When they were done baking, we had to wait until they cooled. In the afternoon, everyone iced their own cupcake, and they were all quickly gobbled up. Everyone loved the Betty Crocker Strawberry Cake Mix we used for our cupcakes!

As part of "The Integrated Arts" program, we had a visitor name Steve Locke spend a couple periods with us today. His activities encouraged us to develop confidence in spoken poetry, and we talked about rhyming and Dr. Seuss!

We also sang Happy Birthday to Mrs. Johannson, and presented her with a special birthday book we made just for her!  (We do this anytime someone in Room 7 has a birthday. Our birthday books have sure evolved from the September books to the books we make now!)

Here's one of the pages in the Birthday book!

Sharing time... L is for leprechaun, and today L is for LION!! (They are growling for the photo!)

Star of the Week + Library

Our "Star of the Week" did a great job telling us all about herself!

Mr. Wesselius read the whole class a story today. Then he read a couple books to a few kids, too!

The number 7 was printed on the board, with 3 blank spaces before it, and 3 blank spaces after it. The kids had to fill in the missing numbers! Try this at home, too!

  • We did a little painting activity today, that involved the 3 primary colours. More on that tomorrow!
  • Everyone enjoyed sharing their weekend news today!

Chrysanthemum

Mick E. Moose reminded us that we are all special, and everyone is unique! We heard the story  Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes -- which helped teach us this message.

Recess time YOGA..

Today we made another Birthday book. Whenever someone is celebrating a birthday, we read The Birthday Cake by Ron VanderMeer, we sing Happy Birthday (a couple versions), and we each draw a special picture - then put them together to make a special birthday book. Then we read the special book at the end of the day!
The birthday boy brought some cupcakes to share with everyone today!
