Star of the Week

Our Star of the Week did a great job telling us all about himself. We read his favourite book, too.

                                                                  Today we did some ABC Rainbow Writing.

                             

As part of the fundraiser for The Dream Factory, everyone was encouraged to wear their pyjamas to school today and make a donation to this charity.

Spirit Week

The Stevenson School Parent Council is raising money for THE DREAM FACTORY . It is a charitable organization dedicated to fulfilling dreams for kids who are battling life threatening illnesses.

In order to raise money for this cause, students are encouraged to bring $1 per day (or whatever they can contribute) as they participate in spirit week activities.

Monday - Comfy Cozy Monday: Wear your pajamas to school (ensure they are clean and appropriate for school please).

Tuesday - Mismatch Day: Wear your clothes inside out/backwards, mismatched, etc.

Wednesday - Crazy Hat Day: Wear a silly hat, or any hat.

Thursday - Crazy Hair Day: See how outrageous or bizarre you can style your hair.

Friday - Sports Day: Wear your favourite sports team shirt or jersey.

As well, family and friends are asked to consider making a donation, too. Students received a form earlier this month to record all donations. For those who make a personal donation of $15 or more, a tax receipt will be issued. Please send in forms this week, if you have not already done so.

Each student who participates will receive a Dream Cloud Factory sticker and a Dream Cloud they can sign and display outside the school office.

Students who participate will also be entered to win some great prizes!

The classroom who raises the most money will get a popcorn party, donated by Parent Council.

Mingle

We like to play a quick game called "Mingle". At any time of the day, Mrs. Grant might say "mingle".  This is our signal to start walking around the room and mingling with everyone. Then, after a few moments, Mrs. Grant says "mingle and find 4" ( or any other number) and everyone must arrange themselves into groups of whatever number was called out!  It takes some thinking…. ie. does our group need more people? …. are there too many people?  Also, we have to use appropriate communication skills when inviting people into our group or telling them we have enough. If there is not enough to form a group, then we also talk about how many are left over!

  Today we checked out the official copy of the Canada Food Guide. We noticed how many servings of each food group a 5 or 6 year old child should have. Everyone took home their own copy of the food guide.

We created our own modern works of art!  We combined several dots of different colours of  paint….and painted!!! They enjoyed watching how the colours blended together. Everyone created unique paintings!

We have been learning about the four food groups this month. Today we did a Smart Board activity where we sorted some foods. We are becoming more familiar with which food groups different foods belong to. 

We each did our own food sort, too! We did a cut and paste activity where we had to sort the foods onto the food group rainbow. (We put foods that belong in the "other" group at the bottom of the food group rainbow.)  Bonus: Cutting and pasting help develop our fine motor skills. :) 

We have also been keeping track of the snacks we bring to school and which food groups they fit into.

Kids in the Know

Using the buddy system......

1.  when you are in a public place, is it o.k. to leave your parents and go to the bathroom by yourself? Just for a few minutes?........ The correct answer is NO.  You should NOT leave your parents, and you should always have a buddy when you go into a public bathroom. (The buddy can wait outside the bathroom stall for you).

2.  A friendly man sees you at the park, and asks you if you would like to go for an ice cream with him.... Is that o.k.?

3. You are walking down the street, and it is raining, and someone driving by stops and says that your mom told him to pick you up and give you a ride home.   Is that o.k.?

Mrs. McDonnell presented our class with numerous examples of situations that were safe or unsafe. We had to listen to each short example, and then decide if the characters in her story were acting in a safe way or not a safe way. We held up a red card to say "not safe" and a green card to say "safe".

Personal information..... Does your child know his/her phone number? Does your child know your "real" name? This is important information that every child should know.

     This young fellow is our Star of the Week.  Yesterday he told us all about himself. Today we did a shared writing activity and wrote a story all about him. We had 6 sentences in our story.

    Sharing time this week…. something that starts with the letter /p/.…. like in St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day fun!

Well….. would you believe a leprechaun was in our room before school started??!!   He left his footprints when he played with our green paint, he left some gold coins, and there was some magic leprechaun glitter-dust, too! He also messed up our room a bit and we had to look around to find our shoes, which were scattered about the room. We found a note with some magic powder and some GREEN milk!  We mixed it up according to his directions… we said the magic words he told us to say…. and ….. then we tried tasting the treat!   Most of us liked it. 

         Mrs. Grant hid (chocolate) gold coins around the classroom. Each coin had the initials of one specific child from our classroom. Each student had to look for the coin that had his/her initials on, and they were not allowed to tell their friends if they found their coin. After a few minutes, everyone had found their specific coin, except for one person. (then someone who had noticed it earlier told him where she had seen it and everyone was happy!)

     We dressed up like a leprechaun, too, just for fun! Check out our videos….

Happy St. Patrick's Day --- from Mrs. Grant and family

Grocery Store

"May I help you?"  These are some of the nice words that were being spoken at the "Kinderstor"  Grocery Store today. It is our newest dramatic play centre. 

    "May I help you?  This is the produce section. We have a good selection of fruits and vegetable."

We must keep the story tidy. This store clerk was spotted cleaning up today!

     This student wrote about what she did when she played in the Grocery Store centre today. She included some sight words she has already learned, and wrote down the sounds that she  could hear in other words she wanted to use. She also remembered to include some "finger spaces" between some words and a period at the end of her story. This is how we learn to write in Kindergarten. What a terrific job she did!

"I was in the cash register. I brought the chocolate milk and I brought watermelon."

Don't forget…. Student Led Conferences today. The school will be open tonight from 4:30-7:00 for you and your child to stop by the classroom. Your child will share what he/she has been learning at school this term. Hope to see you here!

Colour songs

We have been singing some colour songs this year. Here are three of them that we wanted to sing for you. Maybe your Kinder child will sing the other ones for you at home!

We used clear hair gel and food colouring to experiment with another way of mixing colours. It was interesting to watch the colours blend together. Can you guess which 2 primary colours are in each of the bags to create these secondary colours?
