Canada Food Guide

paint the shamrock green,,,

,,..What happens when you add white to a colour?... Let's find out....Stir the white and green together.....

....and the green paint turned into a lighter green coloured paint!

We talked about the Food Guide Rainbow today. We sorted some "play food" into the correct food groups, and talked about how many servings a 5 or 6 year old should have from each food group every day. We also talked about foods that are "treats or once in a while foods" and that are not part of the four food groups  (ie. donuts, cake, sugary treats). We have also been tracking the snacks that we eat at school every morning, to see which food group our snacks are from.

The Four Food Groups

Today we identified different foods and how they fit into the food groups. We also sorted different foods into the food groups, according to the Canada Food Guide. We looked at the food guide to see how many servings of each a 5-6 year old child should be eating. We also talked about foods that don't fit into the food guide, and that we might consider a "sometime" treat, but definitely not an everyday treat. We also looked at some juice boxes and noted whether or not they say 100% juice on them, as we now know those are the healthiest kinds of juice to drink as they don't have added sugar. We are going to track our snacks for the next little while to see what kinds of food we are bringing to school for snack time. (Parents might also like to know that we learned that.... no, chocolate milk does not come from brown cows.)

Mingle

We like to play a quick game called "Mingle". At any time of the day, Mrs. Grant might say "mingle".  This is our signal to start walking around the room and mingling with everyone. Then, after a few moments, Mrs. Grant says "mingle and find 4" ( or any other number) and everyone must arrange themselves into groups of whatever number was called out!  It takes some thinking…. ie. does our group need more people? …. are there too many people?  Also, we have to use appropriate communication skills when inviting people into our group or telling them we have enough. If there is not enough to form a group, then we also talk about how many are left over!

This is a picture after we did a "mingle and find 4" today.

This was our "mingle and find 3".

Today we checked out the official copy of the Canada Food Guide. We noticed how many servings of each food group a 5 or 6 year old child should have. Everyone took home their own copy of the food guide.

We created our own modern works of art!  We combined several dots of different colours of  paint….and painted!!! They enjoyed watching how the colours blended together. Everyone created unique paintings!

Outdoor recess...yeah!

YEAH!!!  We are hoping we have seen the last of indoor recesses this school year!  That was a LOT of days without outdoor play! I caught these kids playing outside at recess enjoying the fresh air, on a most enjoyable winter day !!! Smiles all around!

Today we sorted foods according to the Canada Food Guide. We learned about the 4 basic food groups -- which we should choose food from every day…... and the "other" group -- which includes junk food and treats that we shouldn't eat every day, but just "sometimes" for a little treat.

***  Students are invited to bring in clean, empty food containers from home to use in the new centre we are setting up. Boxes and containers can be sent in any time this month. Thank you.
