Shamrock green

We already know that blue plus yellow makes green…. and today we painted shamrocks with only blue and yellow paint. We mixed the colours, of course, to create the green! We also noticed that there were different kinds of green, depending on how much yellow or blue we had to mix up.

We have been busy documenting our learning about what we know about numbers. We sure do know a lot!   We even figured out a way to make the number nine with our bodies!

Yesterday, our Star of the Week told us all about himself. Thank you for helping us to get to know you a little better!

Outdoor recess...yeah!

YEAH!!!  We are hoping we have seen the last of indoor recesses this school year!  That was a LOT of days without outdoor play! I caught these kids playing outside at recess enjoying the fresh air, on a most enjoyable winter day !!! Smiles all around!

Today we sorted foods according to the Canada Food Guide. We learned about the 4 basic food groups -- which we should choose food from every day…... and the "other" group -- which includes junk food and treats that we shouldn't eat every day, but just "sometimes" for a little treat.

***  Students are invited to bring in clean, empty food containers from home to use in the new centre we are setting up. Boxes and containers can be sent in any time this month. Thank you.

Friday Sharing Time

    The boys and girls from Room 7 who bring something to school when it is their scheduled sharing day, really look forward to "show and telling" everyone about whatever it is they have brought to school. The other kids are also interested in seeing and hearing about what their friends have brought to school. It is a great opportunity to develop public speaking skills, confidence, speech and language skills, listening skills (being a polite listener), and identifying objects that meet the criteria of what can be shared each week.
     And we must also note that everyone also looks  forward to having their photo taken and posted to our blog!  Here's what these Friday kids brought that start with a /m/ sound!

Nunuvut - part 2

Today our visitor from Nunuvut showed us one of the games that both children and adults play in her community. It is made out of a stick, a string, and a piece of bone taken from the neck of the caribou.  You have to swing the bone up and get it to hook onto the stick. She said everyone loves playing it.

Sharing time today --- M is for Monster High

Nunavut

      Today we had a visitor from Sanirajak, Nunavut, Canada. Nunuvut  is the largest, northernmost and newest territory of Canada. Her town of 800 people is also referred to as "Hall Beach". Our visitor teaches Grade 1 in a K-12 school there. It is a school break this week for her, so she came to check out "a southern" school this week. She had to take 3 airplanes to get here! We found Nunavut on a Canada map and we noticed that it is a very big area! We also noticed that the spot where she lives is quite far away from us. Everyone in our class got quite excited when she told us she lives near the North Pole!!! Can you believe it! (and the conversation that arose from that tidbit of information). She told us that there are 2 food stores in her town. Hunters also go out to get food for supper.  They like to hunt for and eat caribou, seals, walrus, beluga whale, and Narwhale. They like to eat fish (such as Arctic Char and Lake Trout), too.  When a polar bear wanders in or near the town, they let everyone know so everyone can stay safe. (They are not allowed to hunt polar bears. It is the law.) The children like to play outside for recess, BUT they do stay indoors when the weather get VERY cold. NOTE:  They only stay inside if the weather is -50 or colder!!!   (WOW!  We stay inside at recess if the weather is -28 C or colder!) She said they all dress appropriately for the weather, so they can have fun playing outside. 

       We had library class today. Mrs. Wood read us a book called "I'm Bored".

Colour Magic

Today we did an activity that used only milk, food colouring, and a magic Q-tip!  It mixed the colours in really "awesome" patterns.

One of our Smart Board games had us sorting pictures by whether they were a primary colour or a secondary colour. The moving circles "sucked" up the picture if we sorted it to the right one!

We discovered that when we mixed all 3 primary colours together we got BROWN!   So we painted a brown bear today.

More magic!!!   We said a few magic words, gave this a shake, and then mixed up two primary colours to get the secondary colour for a minute, before it returned to the primary colours.

Everyone really enjoyed reading this book today. They thought it was pretty "cool".

IF they live in our area,  please have them stop by the school this week to register the child for Kindergarten. This is the time to sign up for Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year!

One of the activities we did on the Smart Board today was a game about Curious George and colour mixing. The boys and girls had fun experimenting with the different colours that George made by mixing the primary colours, and by adding white.  You can check it out at home, too.    Our artwork display in the hallway.  We traced 3 basic shapes...overlapped them....and then painted the spaces/shapes the primary colours. Then we did a shared writing activity about what we had done.

Colour Wheel

Today we painted the "primary colours" on something that looked like a pizza cut into 6 pieces. We learned it is called a "colour wheel." Apparently we only had red, yellow, and blue paint in our classroom, so we mixed 2 of them at a time to create new colours-- orange, green, and purple -- which  we call "secondary colours".

      It was a school wide pajama day today!!  

Our division's police office stopped by to read to us today, as part of I Love To Read month.
