Star of the Week & a baby visit

Our Star of the Week did a great job telling us all about himself! 

Baby Elias and his mom came to visit us today (as part of the "Roots of Empathy" program). We noticed some new things that he could do this month that he could not do on his visit last month. It was very exciting to see the changes!

Good bye baby Jacob

Today was our last day with baby Jacob, as part of the "Roots of Empathy" program. He has gained so many milestones since we first met him last fall. He is almost 11 months old now. He knows how to walk, tries talking, has teeth, eats regular food, can play with toys, gives lots of smiles, likes books, and so much more! WOW!!  Thank you to baby Jacob and his mom for coming to visit us every month and help teach us about empathy and how to treat others! We must remember to treat our friends the same way we would treat baby Jacob… with care and respect and empathy!

This school year we have practiced "fire" drills and "lock down" drills.  Today we practiced a "tornado warning" drill. We had to move to a room downstairs, with no outside windows, and sit under the tables. Now we are prepared… just in case!

Roots of Empathy

Baby Jacob came for a visit today. We noticed he can do some new things since he was last here.

• he communicates:  whether or not he likes his snack…. when he is full or doesn't want any more
• his mom stays close by to make sure he stays safe --- doesn't choke, doesn't fall out of his chair

Roots of Empathy

This morning Baby Jacob and his mom came for a visit. We have noticed that he continues to reach new milestones every time we see him!! 

   We are growing, too….. just like Baby Jacob!!

Today we talked about what we did on the weekend, then wrote a story. Here's what a couple Kindergarten kids shared and wrote all by themselves! …..

and I hunted
Easter eggs !

I went to church
I celebrated Easter!

We also talked about Earth Day today.  Earth Day is April 22nd! More on that tomorrow!

Baby Jacob

Baby Jacob and his mom came for a visit (for the Roots of Empathy program).  We noticed he had reached some more milestones since his last visit.

Visitors

Today baby Jacob and his mom, Mrs. Zinn, came to visit us as part of the Roots of Empathy program. We observed that Jacob can sit up by himself now, he can hold a toy, and he can roll over all by himself. His mom said he already has one tooth, and he is getting another one. 

When we measured baby Jacob in the fall, he was only 8 blocks long. Today he was 9 blocks long!!  He has grown!!!

     We were fortunate to have another visitor today. He came from rural Manitoba to read to us for I Love To Read month. Someone recognized him…. and said it was her Grandpa!   Thank you very much for reading us a book this afternoon. Everyone enjoyed the story. It was extra special for one little girl! 

      Our visitor had heard about our Smart Board and noticed it on our blog, so we were happy to demonstrate how we use it. We even encouraged him to give it a try. We guessed the pattern that he made!

Emotions and Empathy

We had a "Roots of Empathy" lesson today. We talked more about emotions. We brainstormed different kinds of emotions and circumstances that might lead to these different emotions. Mrs. Macdonell talked to the students about understanding their own emotions, as well as those of other people. We can "read" peoples' body language and facial expressions to help us understand how they are feeling.

We want to learn different strategies to deal with emotions positively and what we can do to help others when they feel sad, angry/mad, or scared.  This is called "empathy".

Emotions

Today Mrs. Macdonnel (the Resource Teacher) visited our room. She read us a story, and we talked about how parents help their children. We learned about different kinds of emotions. We talked about how sometimes we can make choices to be frustrated and grumpy, or decide to move on to something else that keeps us in a "happy place".

Today we had a visit from some dancers from Lincoln School. They helped promote a new fundraiser that our school is participating in this month.  The fundraiser will support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. All classes will have the opportunity to participate in some kind of dance activity this month. Students are encouraged to bring in pledges to support this fundraiser. Everyone will be receiving a t-shirt for participating. There are some awesome prizes available for fundraisers as well. Check out the package of info. coming home today!

Baby Jacob

Today was "WALK TO SCHOOL DAY".  ALL Staff and students were encouraged to meet at the nearby Football Field- a few blocks down from the school- and we all walked to school together! Some Grade 5 students carried our school banner. It was a beautiful morning to walk to school!

It was great to have some parents join us on our walk, too! Thank you for walking with us!

The school division police personnel also joined us, and other officers were on hand to stop traffic at the busy intersection we had to cross.

Here we are -- back at the school. All students who did the group walk to school met up with all the kids who came straight to school.

THE other exciting event of our day was the highly anticipated arrival of ...... baby Jacob!  He and his mom are helping us out this year with the ROOTS OF EMPATHY program.

Baby Jacob is taller than the Roots of Empathy doll.

He is about 8 blocks long (or tall) right now. We will measure him again later in the year to see how much he has grown.
