We continue to enjoy stories from special visitors. Today our guest reader was Mrs. Pshebniski.   She is the Assistant Superintendent, Program and Curriculum  for our school division. We really enjoyed the stories she read to us. It was nice that she came to our school for "I Love To Read" month.

PaperBag Princess

We had another visitor for "I Love to Read" month..... and you won't believe it!   It was the Paperbag Princess. You may have heard of her....she is a character in The Paperbag Princess book written by Robert Munsch! The Grade One class joined us for the reading of the story book.

We have been using  Valentine cards to make patterns!

Mrs. Macdonell stopped by our room again today to teach us more about the KIDS IN THE KNOW  program. Today we learned about secrets -- KEEP SECRETS and SPEAK SECRETS.  A keep secret is something special -like a birthday present- that you will eventually share with and tell someone about. There is an ending to that secret. A SPEAK SECRET can be related to someone telling you NOT to tell someone something -ever! (like abuse). And this is the kind of secret that you NEED to tell someone you trust about... and if that person doesn't listen, tell someone else that you trust.

We also talked about touches --- inappropriate vs. o.k. touches. No one should be touching you in inappropriate places (like where your bathing suit covers you). (The exception would be a doctor, and your mom or dad would be with you.).  If you are sad and want a hug, then that would be o.k. to ask someone for a hug.

PARENTS:  You are encouraged to follow up this conversation with your child, and make sure they understood the lesson today. Thanks.

As part of  "I Love To Read" month, we were delighted to have one little girl's mom come read to our class. She read the book The Wide-Mouthed Frog to our class. Everyone enjoyed this funny pop-up book! 

** Thank you very much for coming to read to us! ** All other parents/grand-parents are invited to come read to us, too!

We also practiced reading some little books to ourselves and to a partner today. 

The new waitress costume was a hit!!  Many kids took turns being the waitress and writing down the orders of the customers.

Mrs. Macdonell talked to us today about feelings and understanding how we might feel in different kinds of situations. We also talked about identifying adults that we can trust to help us if we need to talk about something and/or if there is a problem that we need help with. (ie. if we get lost in the mall, who can we ask to help us find our family). This is part of a program called Kids in the Know  (click on the link to find out more about this program.)

Olympic rings

We painted some Olympic coloured rings today!

Olympics!

Today we watched a few minutes of the opening ceremony of the Olympics and saw the Olympic torch being carried to light the Olympic cauldron in Sochi, Russia. We then made our own Olympic torch. We imagined what kind of athlete we might be if we were at the Olympics.

Today everyone was encouraged to wear a hat to school .....as part of "Hats off to Reading". This is what our class looked like!

I Love To Read

Today we had house groups. As part of I Love To Read month, each house group made bookmarks. Everyone personalized their own bookmark to take home.

Today we had an assembly first thing this morning....as a kick off to  the Olympics and I Love To Read. The Grade One class performed a Sound Story. The Grade 4-5 choir sang a beautiful song that they will be performing at the festival next month. Students were all challenged to read one book for every medal that Canada wins at the Olympics. Go Canada!!

FOR TUESDAY, FEB. 4th…..

...As a kick off to I LOVE TO READ month, and Olympic month, all students are encouraged to wear a sports jersey/shirt to school tomorrow. (i.e. hockey, soccer, dance, etc.)
