Paper pirate hats

We reused newspaper today to make pirate hats!!! 

We practiced a lock down today. We talked about how we need to keep ourselves safely locked inside our classroom (door locked and lights out) -- in case an unwelcome stranger or intruder comes to our school. We have to be very quiet, so the intruder doesn't know we are in here. 

All kinds of paper!

Thank you to all the families who sent in some paper samples! We had a wide variety to explore!

This afternoon we did an experiment to see how strong a construction paper bridge could be. First we used a flat paper. Our paper bridge collapsed after only 4 pennies were placed on it. The flat paper was not very strong at all.  But then....

.....we folded the same paper in an accordion fold or fan style.  Like this...

Then we started putting pennies on it and counted as we went. We were getting tired counting! .......... 

.........Finally, after 247 pennies, our bridge collapsed!  WOW!  IT sure held a lot of pennies! We were SO surprised how a folded paper could be that much stronger than a flat paper!!!! Then we checked out some cardboard, and noticed the little folded paper inside the flat sheets of paper. 

We also sorted some types of paper by different kinds of characteristics. Some of the vocabulary we used included.. thin, thick, hard, soft, smooth, rough, pliable, absorbent.

Paper

Today we explored PAPER -- different types of paper, and different characteristics of paper, and learned some vocabulary associated with paper. Here we are checking out some different papers.

We brainstormed some kinds of paper that we know about......(we also noticed that 2 words have a silent /w/ at the beginning!)

We wrote down some of the words that help describe different kinds of paper....

3 Billy Goats Gruff

A day of different bridges………

Today we made a little bridge with some blocks and paper. We wanted to see how strong the bridge was and how many pennies it could hold. Our experiment showed that a flat piece of paper was not very strong at all. Our bridge sunk down!  BUT...when we folded the paper ...it got very strong! We counted 100 pennies..and it was still so strong! No sign of sinking down! Folded paper really was stronger than just plain paper! (We also checked out some cardboard and noticed the folds inside the layers of cardboard!)

Next we read a story about another bridge --- that had a TROLL living under it!  We read the "Three Billy Goats Gruff"…. and then acted out our own version of the tale.  As one student said …"That was awesome!"

Hats off (or on) for Kindergarten!

Today we used newspaper to make hats!  

But before we did our fancy folding to create a paper hat, we were "word detectives" and had to circle the words that we found in the newspaper and could read!!  It was amazing how many words got circled!!  (try this activity at home, and you'll be amazed, too!)

A Social Justice Group of students from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate very generously donated a great big bunch of gently used books to our school. All teachers were able to choose some books to supplement  classroom libraries, and each student in the school had the opportunity to choose a book to take home and keep in their own personal home library. Everyone was very excited about that!!!  (after all….you have to read to become a reader!)
