Math stories, Earth Day Bingo, and more!!

Well, for those of you who read our blog every day, I just wanted to mention that we had no internet service at school for Monday and Tuesday,  but everything has been fixed - so time for a blog post today. I am including photos that I took these past 3 days.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Students in Room 7 are learning to create their own number stories -- when they only have the answer to go by. And they are doing an awesome job.
For example...Mrs. Grant said the answer is "5".... so this boy showed us and told us...
"the boy had 3 teddy bears, and he got 2 more for his birthday, so now he has 5 teddy bears and 3+2=5"

For this story, the answer is "10".   So he told us his story was "The boy had 10 blocks, then he donated 6 of them, so he had 4 left, and 10 - 6 = 4"

The answer is "4". Story...."The boy had 1 star, then he got 3 more stars, now he has 4 stars and 1+3 = 4"

Answer = 4.....Story...."the girl had 3 teddies, then she got 1 more for her birthday, so now she has 4. and 3 + 1=4"

The answer is "10".... story... "The boy had 5 dogs, then he got 5 more, so now he has 10 dogs!!  and 5+5=10"

Music rehearsal... for Music Monday (please refer to the note sent home yesterday for more info.)

Yesterday we made our own version of Earth Day Bingo...... and Today we played BINGO!!

Dance Class with Mrs. Kaczmarz today...

Earth Day

Today is (almost) Earth Day! It is actually on April 22nd, but since we aren't at school on Saturday, we learned about it today!. Almost all the lights were turned out in the school and classrooms as we learned more about "Earth Day". We spent some of the day outside to take advantage of the natural light and clean up some of the area around the school, too!

Here we are after getting on our gloves-- ready to go clean up around the school. The kids couldn't believe how much garbage was on the school property, and couldn't understand why people would not use the garbage cans/recycle bins. Also disappointing to see SO many cigarette butts on the grass!!

The street was getting cleaned in front of the school, so that provided a bit of a distraction for a couple minutes. We talked about the signs and the orange triangular shaped objects  on the trailer, and waved at the workmen, too.
Then back to work!!

We threw our garbage in the big garbage bin, then stopped for a group photo along the fence.

Then we spent the next few minutes at the play structure!

We only have one little window in our room, so it is very dark in our class. We found a brighter space to read a few stories about Earth Day. The elevator area provided just the spot for that!  (we did turn on the one lamp we have to enjoy centre time in our room)

We talked about how great it is that everybody in our class has a lunch kit -- which is able to be reused every day!!  We noticed that many kids have reusable containers in their lunch kit, too, which is great!!  ... we love seeing those little reusable containers with yogurt, crackers, fruit, rice, etc..... and it is nice to see  the thermos bottles with milk or water, and the hot food thermos with your lunch!!   Let's see if we can cut back on how many plastic baggies we see in Room 7 lunch kits!

More about Earth Day

We have talked a lot about recycling since the start of Kindergarten. We recycle in our classroom, too. We are familiar with the 3 R's…. reduce, reuse, recycle. We know not to litter.  We have read many books about recycling and Earth Day. Everyone in Room 7 wants to do their part to help the Earth!

Today we did some word problems on the Smart Board -- about planting trees and recycling!

Earth Day

Today is Earth Day!  All the lights were turned out in the hallway and classrooms, making it a dark day at school. We spent some of the day outside to take advantage of the natural light. Here we are playing Earth Day bingo.

We also did some reading and singing outside.

We also had gym and recess outside!

We only have one little window in our room, so it is very dark in our class. At the end of the day we found a brighter space to read a couple stories about Earth Day. The elevator area provided just the spot for that!

We also spent a couple periods in the Science Lab. It has nice big windows to let in the sunshine!  Three kids remembered their Sharing today.

Please do your part to help our Earth!!
